Continued investment in secure food waste destruction and recycling
Swancote Energy was founded in 2011 as a bio-fuel business and started producing electricity a year later. Since then the company has grown year after year, increasing the amount of electricity it supplies and gradually switching focus, to use food waste rather than bio-fuel crops as its main raw material.
The goal has been to provide a complete solution for dealing with food waste in the most sustainable manner, so that in actual fact, nothing goes to waste at all. The company has increased the capacity of its anaerobic digestion plant, introduced a pasteurisation facility for producing organic fertiliser, and continued to expand its de-packing lines, to handle all types of food waste and its corresponding packaging.
“In 2022 Swancote became the first, and so far only, UK company to install an optical sorter. This enables the business to sort different plastics by polymer type, so that no recyclable plastic needs to go to landfill or incineration.”

2011 – company founded and anaerobic digestion plant installation begins
2012 – Swancote starts to produce electricity at 4,370 MWe per annum
2013 – electricity production increases to 18,000 MWe per annum
2015 – electricity production at 29,784 MWe per year, 60% of raw material is commercial food waste
2022 – optical sorter installed and 90% of raw material used is food waste
