Customers often ask us about what happens to commercial food waste when it is destroyed securely by Swancote Energy. Here is a simple step by step guide. There’s a link at the end where you can download a brief summary.
1. The first step is to book your consignment for arrival at our secure gated facility. Only loads on our booking system will be allowed to enter the site.
2. Once onsite the consignment will be immediately unloaded into our secure premises, which is monitored 24/7 by CCTV.
3. Packaging is recovered manually and mechanically, and broken down to the point that it is unrecognisable.
4. Cardboard, plastic, metal and glass is sent for recycling.
5. Once de-packaged (within 48hrs of arrival), the food waste is destroyed to produce “soup” ready for recycling.
6. At this point a certificate of secure destruction can be issued.
7. Meanwhile, the food waste “soup” is fed into our anaerobic digesters, where it is broken down to produce Biogas and liquid digestate.
8. The Biogas is used to heat our site, to generate electricity and to create Biomethane.
9. The liquid digestate is pasteurised so that it can be used as an organic fertiliser on local farms.
10. The electricity generated powers our plant and local businesses. The Biomethane is supplied to the national grid.
Our customers can rest assured that their food waste is destroyed securely on our closed site and that both the food waste and its packaging are recycled to help the environment and support their sustainability goals.
