At Swancote Energy we’re proud to mark a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.
On 9th May 2024, we successfully completed the first trailer load of gas at our Biomethane Upgrader Plant, a moment that represents the beginning of a transformative journey in the world of green energy.
Since then, our plant has made incredible strides in producing renewable biomethane, a crucial step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
To date, we’ve produced 35,641.76 megawatt-hours (MWh) of biomethane, enough to power around 3,000 homes over a 12 month period. This achievement highlights the potential of our innovative approach to turning waste into a valuable energy source.
Growth and Future Prospects
Since our plant was commissioned, gas production has gone from strength to strength, driven by the introduction of new waste streams and optimized operational processes. We’re excited about the future of our biomethane production, as we continue to scale up operations and explore new opportunities for expanding our feedstock sources.
The next stage in Swancote Energy’s evolution is capturing Carbon Dioxide. Capturing CO2, also known as carbon capture, is a crucial technology in the fight against climate change. This process involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources, power plants, or even directly from the air, preventing them from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming. In our case, this means capturing the CO2 that is being emitted from our biomethane upgrader. Swancote Energy will capture 8000 tons per year which will be used in the food and aggregates industries. This will be operational from September 2025.
The benefits of CO2 capture are vast. It helps reduce the overall concentration of greenhouse gases, lowers carbon footprints, and can play a significant role in achieving net-zero emissions targets. Additionally, captured CO2 can be stored underground in geological formations or used in various industries, such as enhancing oil recovery or producing sustainable materials like concrete. Ultimately, carbon capture is a vital tool for mitigating climate change, promoting sustainability, and enabling a transition to a cleaner, greener future.
