The prompt disposal of commercial food waste brings multiple benefits to all types of businesses. It reduces risk associated with hygiene and safety, frees up space on site and removes material that might otherwise attract pests. A waste free site also ensures that a company’s reputation is not harmed by unsightly waste stock and the associated unpleasant smells. In contrast, the accumulation of food waste on site creates a poor image in terms of efficiency and quality, both with staff and visitors.
Although the benefits of timely food waste disposal are common to all businesses, there is no “one size fits all” solution, which is why at Swancote we work with our customers to create a bespoke service that meets their needs in terms of practicality and frequency.
To dispose of commercial food waste in an efficient and timely manner, there are a few points to consider, such as:
1. What is the nature of the food waste?
2. How is it stored on the customer’s site?
3. What, if any, containers are used?
4. How much food waste is generated over a set period of time?
5. What kind of paper trail is needed for record keeping, insurance purposes or regulatory affairs?
With this information, we are able to help our customers with food waste storage on their site, provide logistical support and food waste containers, create a schedule for collections and generate appropriate certification. Furthermore we can either make food waste collections ourselves or work with our customers’ hauliers.
Here’s an example of how that can work in practice…
We were approached by a leading industrial bakery who had become dissatisfied with their existing waste management service provider. Prior to our involvement, food waste products such as flapjacks and cake bars had been stored in containers that were open to the elements, so that the food waste would get wet and be a potential problem with pests. The problem was made worse because collections were infrequent so that food waste storage on site was a continual issue, taking up much needed space. Furthermore record keeping from the supplier was not as required by the customer.
Following a site visit and detailed discussion of of the customer’s requirements we presented a costed proposal to meet their needs.
Once appointed we provided stackable dolavs with lids which allowed the customer to make better use of their space on site. The sealed dolav containers also ensured that waste products would be protected from the weather and pests. We also provided IBCs for liquid waste. The customer now keeps 40 dolavs on site which we swap with clean empty ones within 24 hours of receiving an email request.
Importantly we provide the customer with weighbridge tickets and certificates of destruction for every load, so that the customer is better able to track and manage their food waste.
On top of this the customer also has the reassurance of knowing that because they work with Swancote, their food waste is turned into clean energy and that any packaging we collect is recycled, helping to support their sustainability goals.
