New food waste recycling service for small businesses
31st July 2023
Swancote Energy, has introduced a number of bin rounds to collect food waste from small to medium sized businesses across the West Midlands.
The company runs an anaerobic digestion plant near Bridgnorth, where food waste is converted into electricity and fertiliser. Ian Mason from Swancote explains the benefits of the new service: “Businesses that separate food waste from general waste can save money and be more eco-friendly. Because we can use food waste to generate electricity, we don’t have to charge so much to collect it. Also, when you mix food waste with general waste it will either go to landfill or be incinerated, neither of which are great for the environment.”
So far, Swancote has launched 5 bin rounds, covering DY, WS and WV postcodes. Customers can choose either 240L or 1100L bins, which will be emptied weekly. “Prices start from £9 per bin per collection,” says Ian, “and we plan to add more rounds to meet demand across the region. Our bin collection service is targeted at local businesses such as pubs, restaurants, take-aways, and small scale manufacturers. When companies use Swancote to collect their food waste, they don’t need so many general waste collections, so it’s a win-win because it will save them money and benefit the environment.”
